Are LED’s environmentally friendly?  Everything we do in our lives has an impact to the environment some way or another, so the question is does using LED’s reduce the impact making them more environmentally friendly?

When looking into this issue we must take into the account of the total life span of the lights themselves including the extraction of raw materials, the  manufacturing and transportation, storage, use, and of course the disposal of the product at the end of its life cycle. with that in mind lets take a look.

Carbon Dioxide

LED’s use a lot less energy compared to their incandescent and halogen counterparts, so as we mainly burn fossil fuels to produce our electricity there is of course a direct link between the amount of electricity we use and the levels of carbon dioxide that is entered into our atmosphere. So because lighting the LED’s takes much less energy the end result is that carbon dioxide is produced.

Materials Consumed

LED bulbs will last three times longer than Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s) and ten time longer than halogen and incandescent light bulbs. What this means is that for every bulb that fails it takes more material and energy in which to manufacture another and replace it. So as LED’s have a much longer life cycle compared to their counterparts they help to conserve our natural resources as well as reducing the amount of Carbon Dioxide emissions produced during their manufacturing process.

Harmful Chemicals

The LED’s do not contain any harmful chemicals unlike their CFL counterparts. CFL’s contain mercury vapor which if leaks out can cause ecological damage, so avoiding breakages is a must for this product but this cannot always be helped. Disposing of CFL’s correctly means a lengthy and energy intensive process of collecting all of the mercury, which causes an increase to environmental impact of the bulb.

Recycling

One huge problem with incandescent lights bulbs is that they are not recyclable, so they just end up in a landfill. Once and LED has come to the end of its life cycle they can actually be recycled and used to make LED’s again to manufacture new LED’s.

With our range of LED Tape its never been a better time in which to upgrade your old lighting systems to LED lighting, not only will you be helping the environment but you will also benefit financially with lower utility bills.
