Here is a list of lighting terms you should know with their definitions to help you get started in understanding what it all means, as i there is a lot of terms used within the lighting industry.

Volts

The simplest way to understand volts is that it is a measurement of electrical potential. It is what pushes the electrical current through a conductor.

Watts

Watts are the calculation of power that the product will be drawing from the electrical system, the higher the wattage the more power is consumed meaning the more they cost to run. LED lights however have a low wattage which means they are much cheaper to run.

Colour Temperature

Colour temperature is simply the measurement in degrees Kelvin (K) that the light produces. A very simple way of working out what kind of colour temperature you have is the lower the temperature the more yellow the light will look, and the higher the temperature the more whiter the light looks.

Fitting

Fittings are a part of the bulb that connects to the electricity supply allowing the power to flow through and shine. There are many different types of fittings but all have been designed for easy removal and replacement. The different fittings can be identified by a unique code that usually consist of  letters and numbers.

Life Hours

Life hours is the calculation of the amount of time the light bulb is expected to last. For standard lamps their life hours are calculated by observing when around half of the sample lamps have failed. With the LED lights their life hours are calculated by their lumen maintenance, which is the amount of light that is retained by a light source over a given length of time.

Lumen Rating

The Lumen rating is simply the measurement of how much the light bulb is producing. The higher the Lumen rating the brighter the light source is, and the lower the Lumen rating the lower the brightness.
